Take a deep breath. You can get through your craving.
Cravings can come on suddenly―and feel very intense―but they often only last for a few minutes. To manage these brief periods without reaching for a cigarette, it can be helpful to have a number of distraction methods at the ready.
Some people find replacing the hand-to-mouth action useful.
Every time you feel like smoking, try:
- Drinking a glass of water.
- Eating a lollipop.
- Having a mint.
You can also try activities that keep your mind focused on something else. Try:
- Doing a crossword or Sudoku.
- Meditating or practicing relaxation skills.
Perhaps you’d like to rediscover an old hobby, like painting or sport. If you don’t have one, consider going for a walk around the block to distract yourself. Try to stay busy and fill up your week with activities, so that there’s less time for your mind to wander.
Every time you overcome a craving, you’re another step closer to quitting for good.
